DESCRIPTION: The reconstruction of an old villa in the Shanghai French Concession into a Spanish Restaurant triggered us revisit our understanding of identity. Since the original abandoned shell had lost all its distinctive European style elements and new opportunity is offered now to us to explore the trans-cultural realities of this Metropolis. The new programmatic layout evolves in the three-level structure and gets emphasized in some special moments. These dispersed moments emerge as lanterns and are all reconnected with a continuous membrane that dresses the nude house with a folkloric-styled cape.
